What is the Brightspace Accessibility Checker?

The Brightspace Accessibility Checker is a built-in tool within the Brightspace learning management system that allows users to scan their course content for potential accessibility issues, like missing alt text for images, low color contrast, or improper heading structure, and provides suggestions to fix them, helping to ensure their course materials are accessible to all learners, including those with disabilities; it can be accessed through the HTML editor within Brightspace. 

Why should you use the Brightspace Accessibility Checker?

  • Function:

It checks your course content against accessibility standards like WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) to identify potential barriers for users with disabilities. 

  • Access:

You can find the checker within the HTML editor when creating or editing Brightspace content pages. 

  • How it works:

When you run the checker, it analyzes your content and highlights areas that might need improvement, guiding how to fix them. 

  • Common issues it checks for:

Missing alt text for images, inadequate color contrast, incorrect heading levels, and improper table structure

Get Started on building accessible Brightspace Content

  • Open a discussion board, announcement, or any text box in Brightspace.

Select the Eye Icon at the Bottom Text Box

A Pop-Up will display some possible issues

The Brightspace accessibility checker pop-up box.

For example, In this image, the issue states, "Images must have an alternative text description."

You will then add them missing information.

With this example, the message stated that Alternative Tex was missing. Therefore, you would enter the missing alternative text and type in the text field “SNHU logo.”

You can continue and select “Next Issue.” and complete as needed
