Creating Accessible links in Microsoft Teams

Updated on

A hyperlink is a clickable or pressable element directing users to an image, document, or online content.

Why should you create descriptive hyperlinks in Teams?

  • Descriptive hyperlinks will allow all users to quickly scan through more information in a Teams conversation more efficiently.
  • Descriptive links help users find what they're looking for quickly. Most people scan web pages, and non-descriptive links require users to read the surrounding text to understand the context.
  • Descriptive link text helps people with cognitive impairments differentiate between links.

  • Use the title on the destination page for the hyperlink text.
  • Avoid using generic link text like "Click here" or "Learn more".
  • Make sure the link is clear, descriptive, purposeful, and meaningful.

  1. In the meeting chat where you type a message, open your formatting options and select the "Format" icon in the compose box (text/message field).

2. Select the "hyperlink" icon. If the icon is hidden, press the ellipsis icon "more options" (three-dot symbol ) to open the "hyperlink icon".

3.   Insert a title for the hyperlink and paste the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) characters in the address bar. When done, press the “Insert” button.

4. Once you added the title/descriptive text and the address, select the "Send" icon.

5. Now your descriptive hyperlinks will convey clear and accurate information about the destination page they are going to. For example, here is a New car buying guide that is an accessible hyperlink.
